as her account was mistaken for one affiliated with the popular terrorist group ISIS, The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The lady in question had this to say to Facebook:
“Why would you disable my personal account? MY REAL NAME IS ISIS ANCHALEE/facepalm.”
“Facebook thinks I’m a terrorist. Apparently sending them a screenshot of my passport is not good enough for them to reopen my account”.
However, her account has since been reactivated followed by an apology from Facebook’s researcher Omid Farivar :
“Isis, sorry about this, I don’t know what happened. I’ve reported it to the right people and we’re working on fixing it”.
We understand she had to go through series of verification processes which included sending a screenshot of her passport three times before her account was restored.
Facebook has a “real names” policy which forbids people from using fake names or ‘offensive’ words. Users are asked to refrain from any symbols, unusual characters, punctuation, religious titles, or “offensive or suggestive words of any kind” to their names to “keep our community safe”. This is designed to prevent impersonation accounts, parodies, and any accounts that could be seen as confrontational or offensive.
